The integrated circuit (IC), also called electronic chip, is an electronic component, which reproduce one, or several, more or less complex electronic functions. Those functions often integrate several types of basic electronic components in a reduced volume (on a small plate), making the circuit easy to implement. The integrated circuit is most often made in monolithic technology based on semiconductor monocrystal, usually silicon. The integrated circuits were invented in 1958 by Jack Kilby, which after many decades brought him the Nobel Prize. During this time, this technology has been improved many times to finally reach its modern form. Check out our offer at Botland store, where we have prepared a wide range of many components designed to build ICs used not only to create interesting projects, but also to repair old equipment and increase its automation.

The origins of integrated circuits
In 1958, the American Jack Kilby invented the first integrated circuit, laying the foundation for modern computer hardware. Jack Kilby made this discovery while his colleagues were enjoying a vacation organized by Texas Instruments. At the time, Kilby had simply wired different transistors together by hand. It would then take only a few months to go from the prototype stage to mass production of silicon chips containing multiple transistors. These sets of transistors interconnected in microscopic circuits in the same block, allowed the realization of memory, as well as logical and arithmetic units. This revolutionary concept combined in an incredibly small volume, a maximum number of logical functions, which the outside world could access through connections distributed around the periphery of the circuit. This discovery earned Kilby a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2000, while he was still on the board of Texas Instruments and held more than 60 patents in his name.
Integrated circuit production and execution
Currently, integrated circuits are produced using an airtight housing, which is usually made of metal, glass or plastic. ICs can be divided into two groups depending on the way they are manufactured: hybrid and monolithic. The vast majority of chips are made in monolithic technology. It is worth noting that the method of producing monocrystals, which dates back to 1916 and was developed by a Polish chemist, is still very often used.
This method is called the Czochralski method after his name. Although many of us are not aware of it, the process of chip production is very complex and we can distinguish as many as 350 technological operations in it. The most important of them include creating a substrate, the process of epitaxy, masking, doping and making connections with the final assembly. Currently, Intel is considered to be the largest chip manufacturer - which is not surprising. In our Botland store we have taken care of a great variety of products, among which you can choose what really suits your needs and can help develop your project.
Integrated circuits are everywhere - and for good reasons
Nowadays, integrated circuits are already very common. They are an inseparable complement to the work of specialists, ensuring the precision of executing their tasks and also help in daily activities of the whole world.
